As full-time, part-time, and adjunct RTPC faculty who work in schools and programs across USC, we encourage our colleagues to join us in voting YES for United Faculty – UAW on April 24th-May 15th.
As RTPC (non-tenure-track and continuing appointment) faculty, we come from varied backgrounds and teach in a wide array of fields and instructional contexts. We teach in classrooms, labs, studios and clinics, conduct research, and perform engagement and service. But together we play a central role advancing USC’s core educational mission that depends on this diversity of learning experiences. Because we care deeply about this core mission and our ability to enhance the educational experience of our students, we also understand the value of faculty having a stronger voice in the workplace.
We have a historic opportunity and a clear choice in this election. Without a union and collective bargaining, the USC administration can and does change our conditions unilaterally, as they have done in recent years by increasing our healthcare costs, reducing tuition assistance benefits, increasing workloads, and refusing pay increases that address the skyrocketing cost of living. With a union and collective bargaining, we know we can negotiate for improvements in these and other areas that would make our lives better and would enable us to focus more on providing quality teaching and care.
In these challenging times for USC and higher education more broadly, it’s more important than ever that we have a stronger faculty voice. By uniting with nearly 4,000 other unionized academic workers at USC, as well as thousands of faculty across the United States who have unionized in recent years, we can improve our lives and the quality of education at USC and join the larger movement to protect the future of higher education.
