Letter to President Kim: Respect the Results of Our Vote
Dear President Kim,
Non-tenure-track faculty have now voted by an overwhelming 70 percent margin to form our union, United Faculty-UAW. As faculty who are active union supporters in schools across USC, we urge you to honor the results of our vote, drop any appeals, and commit to bargain in good faith for a fair contract.
We have come together to improve our lives and the lives of our students, patients, families, and community. We also believe that when educators are respected, supported, heard, and empowered to do their best work, universities thrive. For these reasons, we find the administration’s appeal to the Trump NLRB not only undemocratic, but counterproductive to our shared mission of strengthening USC.
This is a historic vote. We are proud of the thousands of conversations that have flourished between NTT faculty about the positive change we can make by joining together – and look forward to building off of these conversations toward meaningful improvements for all of us in the form of our first union contract.
Throughout the election, the USC administration repeatedly reminded faculty of the importance of participation in our vote. Now that a supermajority of faculty have participated and voted so decisively, we urge you to respect that vote.
At a time when higher education and democratic rights are under attack, it is more important than ever that our majority vote be respected. Countless voices in the USC and larger Los Angeles communities agree. From tenure-track faculty, undergraduate students, and 4,000 other unionized academic workers, to Los Angeles-area elected representatives across five bodies of government, these groups have urged the USC administration to honor the results of our election.
USC has the chance to model how universities and faculty can work together to build a stronger future for students, educators, and the institution as a whole, as well as the democratic and civic values we cherish as an educational community. But the pursuit of these values can only occur in an environment of mutual respect. We therefore urge you to respect our vote and bargain with United Faculty-UAW.
